SCRANTON

When television producers were looking to transplant the BBC hit The Office and needed a dreary mediocre city, they turned to Scranton. Once known as “Anthracite Capital of the World,” Scranton saw hard times when coal fell out of favor and big companies moved away, a decline that started decades ago.

Scranton, however, is trying to wage a comeback and has a sense of humor about its dreary image and second enthusiastic nickname, “The Electric City.” The city hosted a convention for The Office and hangs banners for its fictional paper company Dunder-Miflin around town. “Life moves a little slower in Scranton, and that’s the way we like it,” The Office’s jerky boss Michael Scott narrates an informative video. On YouTube you can find a Scranton Rap video that describes Scranton as, “a city of empty minds and trains that just don’t run, but oh what fun.”

Meanwhile it’s wooing young people to stay or move back home with programs like Rediscover Scranton. Robert Watts, director of the Scranton Chapter of POWER! (Professionals Organized and Working to Enrich the Region), pushes the quality of life and low cost of living and running a business. When he heard about tech businesses starting up, he decided he wanted to move back and “be a part of it,” he says.

He also likes the eccentric character of the town. “I like the boutiques, the coffee shops, the first Medical School in the U.S. since Kennedy was President, The Office fame, the Scranton Enterprise Center, and all of that Electric City Renaissance jazz,” he writes on a blog on Scranton resurgence. “But I love the throwbacks hidden in the downtown.”

-----------

R. Watts also helms (or often posts to) the blog "Electric City Renaissance": http://www.electriccityr.com/

Pa. judge rules wedding by Internet-ordained minister invalid

YORK, Pa. - A couple who broke up seven months after their wedding vows wondered if the ceremony performed by a friend ordained via the Internet was even valid under state law.

Now a York County judge has ruled that it was not, although a Universal Life Church official hopes to challenge that ruling.

David Cleaver, solicitor for the state Association of Registers of Wills and Clerks of Orphans' Court, said the case is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, and his organization is advising members not to file such marriages.

State law says those qualified to officiate at marriages are judges, mayors, and the ministers, priests or rabbis of a "regularly established church or congregation."

Judge Maria Musti Cook ruled that Adam Johnston, who performed the Aug. 24, 2006, ceremony at the home of Dorie E. Heyer and Jacob T. Hollerbush, was not a member of the Universal Life Church before he received his ordination.

Johnston testified that he did not have a congregation he met with regularly and did not have a place of worship, Cook wrote in a ruling issued Friday.

Heyer, 21, of Windsor Township, and Hollerbush, 24, of York, said they hope their experience will be of value to others.

Heyer said she agreed such a ceremony did not have legal standing. "It makes a mockery out of the whole marriage system," she said.

The Pennsylvania House is considering legislation that would exclude churches or congregations that offer ordinations by mail or through electronic means.

G. Martin Freeman, Universal Life Church Monastery president, said he hopes to challenge Cook's ruling.

Freeman said the decision to accept some ministers but not others was arbitrary and would violate the constitutional separation of church and state.
Alleged thief takes plunge to elude pursuing citizens
BY BORYS KRAWCZENIUK
STAFF WRITER
11/19/2006

Edward R. Morrell got himself in hot water Saturday, then jumped into cold water and almost got himself killed.

Scranton firefighters fished Mr. Morrell, 49, of Scranton, out of Roaring Brook, which he waded into while trying to avoid capture for a theft at 6:58 p.m. at Molly Brannigan’s on Adams Avenue.

“We thought he was gone,” said Bill Kreis, 49, of Dunmore, one of three people who lost track of Mr. Morrell after chasing him to the stream near the Chamberlain Manufacturing ammunition plant.

Police Sgt. Robert Stanek said Mr. Morrell had a couple of beers at Brannigan’s, then walked up to a table where John Peragallo, 74, of Paterson, N.J., was sitting.

He introduced himself, and they talked but eventually Mr. Morrell grabbed Mr. Peragallo’s wallet from the table, Sgt. Stanek said.

Mr. Kreis heard a commotion as Mr. Peragallo shouted, “He stole my wallet.”

The chase was on.

Mr. Morrell knocked down several patrons as he fled, police said. He ran out onto Adams Avenue, which turns into Cedar after crossing Lackawanna Avenue. Mr. Kreis, a waiter and another patron chased him about three blocks to near the plant, where Mr. Morrell scaled a 6-foot chain-link fence and ran into Roaring Brook.

His pursuers lost sight of him, but when Mr. Kreis threw a rock into the stream, Mr. Morrell surfaced at the water’s edge.

Mr. Kreis said he ran to the stream and grabbed a second rock. When Mr. Morrell refused to stop, Mr. Kreis said he threw it at him, narrowly missing his head. Mr. Morrell began swimming upstream toward the Cedar Avenue bridge, Mr. Kreis said.

As police arrived, Mr. Morrell swam to the other side of the stream, where his escape was blocked by a concrete retaining wall. The current, which was running faster than usual because the creek was swollen by heavy rains Thursday, began carrying him toward the brink of a 15-foot-high dam. He tried to climb into a storm sewer outfall but slipped out.

He snagged the limb of an inundated tree about 40 feet from the dam’s brink. Dressed in a green football jersey with the number “23” in white, Mr. Morell hung on.

Within 15 minutes, Rescue One firefighter Al Taylor had rappelled down the wall suspended by a rope and harness. He grabbed Mr. Morrell, who refused to cooperate and be placed in a separate harness.

When it became apparent he wouldn’t cooperate, partly because he was combative and partly because he was slipping in and out of consciousness, a second firefighter, Bob Hannon, also rappelled down the wall.

A wire basket followed. The rescue took about half an hour, but the two firefighters finally got Mr. Morell into the basket, laced him in and watched as other firefighters used ropes to raise him into the parking lot of a Convenient Food Mart on Cedar Avenue, almost an hour after the robbery.

The firefighters were pulled back up, and ambulances took them and Mr. Morrell to Community Medical Center for treatment. Mr. Taylor and Mr. Hannon were treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman, who had no information on Mr. Morrell’s condition.

Police stationed an officer at the hospital to await Mr. Morrell’s release. Already wanted for a parole violation, Mr. Morrell was expected to be jailed for the violation and also will face at least a disorderly conduct charge.

Sgt. Stanek said Mr. Peragallo did not want to press a robbery charge. Police recovered the wallet and found Mr. Morrell had several hundred dollars on him, presumably, police said, belonging to Mr. Peragallo.

Rescue One Capt. Dave Schreiber said the fast current prevented firefighters from rescuing Mr. Morrell by simply walking across the stream from where he entered. Mr. Morrell could have died if he had lost his grip fallen over the dam, Capt. Schreiber said.

“If he goes any further, he’s done because that’s a pretty good drop,” Mr. Kreis said.
Underground comfort spot gone but still not forgotten
11/19/2006

In 1915, Scranton was a cosmopolitan city with a lively downtown. Tall buildings housed thriving businesses, elegant shops lined the busy streets, and the Lackawanna County Courthouse stood proudly at the center. Its parklike square offered a cool respite for shoppers and workers. At night, the theaters and lecture halls drew large crowds, and Courthouse Square was a popular venue for concerts.

The rhythm of life was different in those days when the downtown was the heart of the city. We might not stop to think about it, but public restrooms were a necessity. Passengers riding the electric trolley from Old Forge to Scranton had a lengthy trip. Patrons shopping at various stores along the avenues also needed access to a public facility. To meet these needs, a thoroughly modern comfort station opened on Courthouse Square on Dec. 14, 1915.

The citizens of Scranton brought a sense of civic pride to everything they did, making certain that their beloved city held its own among the great eastern cosmopolitan centers. When they decided on a comfort station, they turned to one of their own top architects, Frederick A. Fletcher of the Duckworth firm in Scranton, the same firm that designed the Hotel Jermyn.

Mr. Fletcher had supervised the building of a similar station in Washington, D.C., several years before. He studied public facilities in Boston, Philadelphia and Wilkes-Barre, and then borrowed the best features of each to create what was said to be the finest comfort station in the country.

Skilled labor

The comfort station was actually built underground, a fete that took considerable skill. Mr. Fletcher was up to the challenge, and Carlucci and Co., another well-known Scranton business, worked as the general contractors. The firm of Palumbo and Kroft did the concrete work.

The decision to build underground most likely had to do with the desire to preserve the beauty of the square. The station had two entrances: the gentlemen’s entrance on the Washington Avenue side of the square, and the ladies’ entrance on the Spruce Street corner. Attendants were on hand to take care of customer needs and to maintain an optimum level of cleanliness.

Attention to detail

The station itself measured 18 by 64 feet overall, with the floor of the structure 12 feet under the street level. A solid 18-inch concrete wall assured that the building was protected from dampness.

Every detail of the interior was designed for elegance and sanitation. Georgia marble, white enamel, metal and brass were classic features that allowed for efficient cleaning. The five interior rooms were designed with rounded corners, permitting the attendant to clean without dirt collecting in sharp corners.

Each of the rooms contained air ducts that allowed circulation throughout the structure. Internal air was forced out through a vent located near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Fresh air was pumped in through radiators located just above the entrance. In the winter, the fresh air passed over heat coils before it circulated throughout the station, warming the interior to a comfortable temperature. In summer, outside air passed over cooling coils. The air circulated through a complete cycle every three minutes. The entrance and the air vent were the only parts of the station that were visible from the surface. A plaque at the entrance paid tribute to the members of the City Planning Committee.

The comfort station remained in use into the early 1970s, under the direction of the city’s Public Works department. The city sometimes considered closing the facility, but whenever the subject came up, it was promptly voted down because the station was so well used. By the early 1970s, though, the rhythm of urban life had changed considerably, and the once-popular station was no longer considered safe.

All visible traces of the comfort station are gone, but the beautiful Courthouse Square remains at the heart of a city alive with its own past.

Web site rattles Gatelli
BY STACY BROWN
STAFF WRITER

Choking back tears and admitting she feels intimidated, Judy Gatelli said she is contemplating resigning from City Council because she and her family have become the targets of a relentless assault by the moderator of a Web site originally designed to try to unseat Mayor Chris Doherty.

“This isn’t right. It is harassment in the worst way,” the council president said Tuesday. “They have called me names, which I can take, but when you start with my kids, that’s a whole different thing. I have been considering quitting because with family involved, you have to wonder if it is all worth it.”

Earlier this year, Mrs. Gatelli asked that a police officer be posted at all City Council meetings because, she said, “I feel threatened and I’m afraid.”

The controversial Web site was created last year by Scranton resident Joseph Pilchesky, who did not want to see Mr. Doherty re-elected. However, it quickly turned into a chat room of posters who have used it as a tool to unleash criticism and personal attacks against certain public officials.

A year ago, the Web site was taken offline by the Canadian company that hosted it when Sara Hailstone, executive director of the Office of Economic and Community Development, complained that references made about her constituted threats. After changing providers to a company in Great Britain, the site is back on line.

Mr. Pilchesky last year invited posters to provide information about Ms. Hailstone and her family and last month made the identical invitation to posters about Mrs. Gatelli.

“It is not a free speech issue,” Ms. Hailstone said this week, echoing her comments from a year ago. “This is about me and my family’s safety.”

Mr. Pilchesky, who said his Web site gets thousands of hits per day, denied any of the postings are threatening or illegal.

“I’m uncomfortable with trusting Judy Gatelli,” Mr. Pilchesky said. “I don’t like the way she is handling the mayor. If Judy is feeling threatened, I don’t see what for. I make it clear that I don’t like Mrs. Gatelli because she is corrupt.”

As of Tuesday, the Web site had 226 separate threads regarding Mrs. Gatelli, most of them referring to the selection process council is using to choose a replacement for Robert McTiernan, who resigned two weeks ago.

“This appointment means a lot and many people don’t want to see that seat go to another ‘Yes’ person and that’s why we’re irritated,” Mr. Pilchesky said.

However, Mrs. Gatelli said she hasn’t made up her mind about a replacement and hasn’t discussed possibilities with anyone.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” she said.

Scranton police confirmed Tuesday the Web site had come to their attention and that they have begun looking into whether remarks on it are unlawful threats or harassment.

“This is a terrible situation,” councilwoman Sherry Nealon Fanucci said. “This Web site is about intimidation and bullying. I’ve been worried about Mrs. Gatelli.”

While Ms. Fanucci was quick to come to Mrs. Gatelli’s defense, the remaining council members were guarded in their response to the situation.

“I’m shocked that Mrs. Gatelli would consider quitting because I think it is free speech,” Bill Courtright said. “I don’t think people should attack her family.”

Janet Evans, who has enjoyed the support of posters on the Web site, said she simply doesn’t have time to involve herself in those activities.

“I have too much work to do because there is the budget and the selection of a new council person that needs to be done,” Mrs. Evans said. “I would hope Mrs. Gatelli didn’t quit, however.”

Mrs. Gatelli said she may address the issue at Thursday’s meeting.

Last year I moved from Europe ( was commuting between The Netherlands and Norway) to Dallas. PA. Why you ask? Well I met a guy online and he was from Wilkes-Barre. He sent me tickets to come and visit...Sure. To make a long story short. We fell in love , I moved here and we got married.
Now... I am a bit out of the ordinary person. Yes, even in Europe. But here I have a "cool accent" hehe.
I do old textile handcrafts like spinning, felting, sprang and nalbinding. So I am always looking for people who are crafty, artistic and are not afraid to stand out.
Needless to say, I already got my head in the local newspaper because of my special crafts. And I am sure that was not the last time.
Last St. Patricks day I was part of the Scranton parade with the SCA ( sociaty for Creative Anachronisme) Now that was a BLAST. And ofcourse we were so lucky with the weather.
For the rest I am a spokesperson for the local Pagan community. Priestess in Wicca.
And I just decided to become volenteer at the Hillside farm, Shavertown. They have sheep.
So me with my fibre stuff..'nuff said.
We have made a Yahoo group to get Pagans from our area connected. So they can come out of their broom closet :-)

---
Merry Meet, and welcome to the NEPA Pagan Fellowship.

The Fellowship is open to any Pagan or Pagan-friendly people in and around Northeastern Pennsylvania. The number one mission of the NEPA Pagan Fellowship is to bring Pagans in this geographical area together to communicate, network, and build community through meet-ups, celebrations, field trips, potlucks, and the like.

More than a few Yahoo groups have been formed for NEPA Pagans. Our specific emphasis will be on events, things to do, and places to meet. We will strive to keep Pagans in this area informed, bring Pagans together for celebrations at the major recognized Pagan holidays, and present a positive unified front to the public.

This group is family-friendly, and is not intended as a dating
service. Spam, bigotry, hatred, proselytizing, and lewd or violent
comments are not tolerated. Our list is active and open to discussing
many topics on Paganism. We have quite a few people here with different
views, and that is really a good thing. I have been on other lists in
the past that were either neglected and full of spam, or where people
were afraid to talk because of harsh moderation, or where people just
didn't talk, period. Hopefully, that's not us. I encourage those of
you lurking in the shadows to come forth and participate in the
discussions or start one of your own.

Some of the belief systems we embrace are Druid, Wiccan, Norse,
Greek, Slavic, Asatru, Hindu, Egyptian, Buddhism, Witchcraft, Native
American, and Shamanism, to name a few. Roughly speaking, the counties
we encompass are Bradford, Carbon, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne,
Lycoming , Monroe, Montour, Northumberland, Pike, Schuylkill, Snyder,
Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Wayne, and Wyoming.

Thank you for your interest in the NEPA Pagan Fellowship, and we
look forward to meeting you!
Hooters begins interview process for airline staff
BY TOM LONG Staff Writer

AVOCA — In the lobby of the Holiday Inn Express, about 15 women waited Wednesday for interviews to join the staff of the new branch of Hooters Air coming to the airport in Avoca.

Some wore jeans and turtlenecks, others skirts and blouses. A few wore jackets.

But no one came dressed in the restaurant’s trademark miniscule orange shorts and tight white top. There was one example of the skimpy uniform on display — on a table inside room 105, where Hooters Air flight coordinator Danielle Jenkins interviewed candidates from 2 to 8 p.m.

Ms. Jenkins said the airline plans to hire between 15 and 25 girls locally. At first, the girls would work only eight or nine hours a week doing promotional work, but they could work their way into full-time positions as flight attendants or at the airport terminal.

Donning tight shorts might not have hurt.

After coming out of the interview, Niki Pavalone said Ms. Jenkins told her, “‘We’re just looking for fun people who can wear this uniform.’”

Ms. Pavalone, with a laugh, said orange shorts and white top wouldn’t be a problem.

After moving back to Carbondale from Austin, Texas, Ms. Pavalone has been looking for a job. Many girls said they heard about the job on the radio.

Hooters Air is owned by the same company that runs Hooters restaurants. The airline will fly three vacation-oriented routes from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton airport to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and St. Petersburg, Fla. The flights will be staffed with flight attendants as well as Hooters girls who dress in the same garb as Hooters waitresses.

Flights to Florida will begin Oct. 28, according to the company’s Web site.

Tara Genovesi, 19, of Larksville, said she decided to interview after hearing radio advertisements. By 2:45 p.m., she’d been waiting 30 minutes.

“My poor boyfriend is waiting out in the car,” she said.

Wednesday was the only day the airline planned to conduct interviews locally for jobs as Hooters Air girls. Ms. Jenkins said she would review the applicants and decide whom and how many to hire. Those who get a job — along with a new outfit — will be called today.

my letter of comment re: Gene Padden's Katrina article got pubbed in this week's EC:

Dear editor,

"If you didn't leave, then how can you blame anyone but yourself?"

Is it possible for Gene Padden to be any more of callous, un-caring, un-Christian asshole?

Thirty bodies found in a nursing home - nobody to blame but themselves (they should have known better than to get old).
Forty-five bodies found in a hospital - nobody to blame but themselves (they should have known better than to get sick).
The dead woman in a wheelchair outside the Superdome - nobody to blame but herself (she should have just wheeled herself out of the city, after the buses had stopped running (Saturday) and the planes were grounded (Sunday noon). Hurricane Katrina was only 400 miles wide, and the mandatory evacuation order came in on Sunday. Had she wheeled herself out of town at 40 miles per hour - and not met any of the clogged roads clogged with cars - she might have been able to make it. Yep. Her fault.

And lest anybody say these were isolated examples, let us note that Mr. Padden "saw all these people on TV in the days leading up the storm testifying that they were staying put because they were sick of evacuating."

Ah.

You're an awful charitable guy, Mr. Padden.

Philadelphia Is "Shutting It Off"

The average American watches four hours of television a day.

This April 25-May 1, thousands of Philadelphians will bring that number down to zero.

It's all part of TV Turn-off Week, a national campaign to encourage children and adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities.

Locally, the Jaunt will celebrate its third-annual "TV Turn-off Weekend" April 28-May 1. The West Philadelphia storefront will feature live performances in its front window each night during "prime time" to give the neighborhood an entertainment alternative.

"I'm a 'CSI' addict," admits co-organizer Mike Benedetti. "This is a great chance for me to go cold turkey and kick the TV habit."

All events are free and open to the public.

TV TURN-OFF WEEKEND SCHEDULE:

* Thursday, April 28, 7pm--"Tales from the Triple Crown: Misadventures in America's Backcountry," a talk by Mike Benedetti. Mike is one of about forty people to have hiked the entire Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails: the "Triple Crown" of American backpacking. Join him for an evening of stories from his 8,000 miles of adventuring. Those planning to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2005 are especially invited to attend.

* Friday, April 29, 7-10pm--Philadelphians take the stage: IsiZulu language lessons with Sista Fayah; "Pregnancy Adventures" with doula Taina; poetry and freestyle from Philly's finest.

* Saturday, April 30, 7-10pm--Scranton takes the stage: "Scrantasm," the all! new! theatrical from Michael Paulukonis & Alicia Grega-Pikul; "Scrantonia," the light show, puppet show, robot show, and all things that Scranton, PA might have been, courtesy Conor McGuigan; "Shadows," shadow puppets by John Bert. Plus! performances by Frances Pikul, age 7, and Miranda Pikul, age 9. Don't miss it!!!

* Sunday, May 1, 3pm--Synthesizer legend Charles Cohen.

* Each night: the amazing visual phenomenon known only as "Realistic 3-D Effects."

Hey I'm headed to Portland, OR around mid June. I'm moving there to be with my G/F so I wouldn't be making the return trip (strictly one-way). I'm just looking for someone to share expenses and be good company. I'm a 30 Y/O straight guy and I live in Bloomsburg, PA, but I'm willing to drive a few hours to pick you up (i.e. NYC, Philly, or any place else that is along the way). I have a compact pick-up which is good on gas(4 cylinder engine)so I would have room for some gear. I plan to camp along the way to keep costs down mainly state parks. I'm a laid back, easy goin guy with varied musical taste ranging from Phish/Grateful Dead - GG Allin/Slayer, and everything in between. My truck is a stick so if you'd be willing to share driving(although not required) you would need to know how to drive a manual. The trip is 2840 miles, my truck gets aprox. 25-30 MPG+/- @ $2.50 per gallon, so I'm estimating the cost for gas to be aprox $300($150 each). My estimate is on the high end to account for varying gas prices along the way. So if your a cool down to earth person and this sounds good, just drop me an email and let me know a little about you.

Oh by the way, My truck is a single cab so I can only handle one passenger.

a talk by Mike Benedetti

Where: “Test Pattern", 334 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA.
When: Saturday, Jan 8, 2005, 7:30 PM.
For more info: 877.571.4223.

At the age of 31, Mike Benedetti is one of about forty people to have hiked the entire Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails: the “Triple Crown” of American backpacking. Join him for an evening of stories from his 8,000 miles of adventuring. Those planning to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2005 are especially invited to attend.

This event is free and open to the public.

More information and photos of Mr. Benedetti on the trail can be found at http://www.ugcs.org/~benedett/triplecrown.html

------------

Mike has hung out here in Scranton/NEPA quite a lot (when he hasn't been hiking, that is). We were just in John Bromberg's portion of First Night last night. I wore a mask and pressed play on a tape player; Mike played an accordion for several hours.

I think his talk will be pretty good.

Here's what critics are saying...

"Brilliant! A wrenching and provocative work!" Jonathan Adler,
NEWSWEEK

"Smart, compelling and completely fascinating!" Kenneth Turan, THE LA TIMES

"Splendid! A masterpiece!" Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN TIMES

"If there's one movie that ought to be studied by military and civilian leaders around the world at this treacherous historical moment, it is THE FOG OF WAR, Errol Morris's sober, beautifully edited documentary."
Stephen Holden, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Based on the life of Robert S. McNamara, THE FOG OF WAR is a 20th century fable of an American dreamer who rose from humble origins to the heights of political power. The story follows McNamara's life through many crucial events, including the crippling Depression of the 1930's, the industrialization of the war years, his years as Secretary of Defense under President Kennedy and the development of a different kind of warfare based on air power and the creation of a new American
meritocracy.

"Throughout this documentary, we see that McNamara was an idealist who saw his dreams and ideals challenged by the role he played in history," said director Errol Morris. "McNamara raises deep moral questions about his role and, by implication, the entire Allied role in winning the war against Japan by any means."

"For many people who are familiar with the Cuban missile crisis from the movie Thirteen Days, The Fog of War tells a very different story," Morris added. "Here is a story not about how John or Bobby Kennedy saved the world, but of blind luck and the limits of rational judgment."

The Fog of War is the first historical investigation to make extensive use of taped telephone conversations from the Oval Office of the White House between President Lyndon B. Johnson and McNamara. Much of what has been written about McNamara rehashes a familiar story - that of a computer-like man, a hawk. However, the presidential recordings do not bear this out. Instead, a far more complex portrait of the man emerges - one who tried to serve two very different presidents: John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

THE FOG OF WAR is in select theaters now!

Performers need to commit to 2 or 3 night of rehearsals and the evening of the benefit performance event. The script will be read on print by the performers, as opposed to memorization (similar to the commercial production). There will be sign-language interpretation. Running time of the play is between 80-100 minutes.
On Saturday, February 21, 2004, at 8pm, V-Day Scranton will present a one-night-only benefit production of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Scranton Cultural Center's Shopland Hall.

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. Through benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues," unique documentary film projects and innovative gatherings designed to change social attitudes toward violence, V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop worldwide violence against women and girls including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sexual slavery. In its first six years, the V-Day movement has raised over $20 million. The "V" in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina. For more information,
Best Community Activist
WINNER: Lita Grossman Dunn
Embodiment of Change Rally of One (www.rallyofone.org) founder Lita Grossman Dunn doesn't really care that that she's received the honor of "Best Community Activist." She admitted to e.c.that it was cool and all, but recognition is not why she does what she does.

What Grossman Dunn does care about is the 125 came who out to see United Nations-based Middle Eastern scholar Phyllis Benis speak at the University of Scranton on Nov. 12. The "ubergeeksmart"(it's the highest compliment Lita gives) spoke about issues facing the Middle East to a mixed crowd of students, activists, faculty and even department heads.

"The best part was students were asking questions," Grossman Dunn stressed.

Under the auspices of Rally of One, Lita works tirelessly to connect like-minded people, making the introductions that make things happen. She writes letters to her elected officials, sends them e-mail, and calls them on the phone. She absorbs vast quantities of information on a huge spectrum of critical issues and then regurgitates that information for anyone able to handle the truth. If she's not the best community activist, she's at least been the most visible. And activism that doesn't get in your face isn't really activism at all. It's complaining.

"I really don't care that I was selected as the best," Grossman Dunn reiterated. "I'm just excited the category was even included on the ballot!"
